Let an Assistant Keep Stats Without Sharing Your Password

SpikeLedger Team3 min read

You cannot coach a match and keep its stats at the same time. One of the two suffers, and it should not be the coaching.

The usual fix is to hand someone your phone, or give them your login. Both are bad ideas. Your login can change the roster, read every report and open the team's settings. SpikeLedger has a role made for this instead: the stat keeper.

How a stat keeper joins

  1. 1On the team page, tap Stat keeper. The app shows a QR code and a short code.
  2. 2The stat keeper scans the QR code with their own phone, or goes to the join page and types the short code.
  3. 3They type a first name and they are in.

They need no account, no email address and no password. It takes about fifteen seconds. The code lasts one day, which covers a tournament, and then stops working by itself.

A stat keeper can be an assistant coach, a parent volunteer, an injured player or a sibling who knows the game.

What a stat keeper can and cannot do

A stat keeper gets the scoring screen for your team's matches. That is all.

  • They can record stats, score points and set the lineup for a match.
  • They cannot add or remove players, read reports, see parents, or change any setting.
  • They cannot open the coach's bench view.

These limits are checked on the server for every action, not only by hiding buttons.

The coach stays in control

On the team page you see who has joined, by first name. You can stop one stat keeper, or everyone who joined with that code, with one tap. Their screen ends at once.

One scorer at a time

Only one device scores a match at a time. Think of it as holding the pen.

  • Whoever is scoring holds the pen. Everyone else who opens the match sees a live, view-only screen.
  • The coach can take over at any moment.
  • A stat keeper can hand the pen back.
  • If the scorer's phone goes quiet for ten minutes, someone else can pick it up.

This is what stops two phones recording the same rally twice, or one phone overwriting the other's score. When the pen changes hands, the new scorer's screen picks up the court, the serve and the rotation exactly where the last one left them.

Making it easy for a volunteer

A volunteer does not need to know the rotation rules. The app keeps the serve, the rotation and the libero right by itself, and it greys out the buttons that do not apply to the player they tapped. Their job is two taps: who, and what happened.

A good way to start is to have your stat keeper score one set of a practice scrimmage before the tournament. By the second set they will be faster than a clipboard.

What you do with your free hands

While someone else scores, you can open the bench view on your own phone and watch every player's numbers update live. The details of the stat keeper role are on the features page.
